Course Overview

Overview:
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of working safely at height using personal fall protection equipment across diverse environments. It combines theoretical and hands-on training to prepare participants to assess, manage, and mitigate the risks associated with working at height.

 

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Identify hazards associated with working at height
  • Understand relevant legislation and standards
  • Recognise various categories of fall prevention and protection equipment, including their characteristics and limitations
  • Conduct pre-use and post-use inspections of all equipment
  • Apply effective control measures in practical workplace scenarios
  • National Unit of Competency (Delivered and assessed by Skylar Education RTO 21647)
  • RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights

Note: This course is only available via enquiry and includes two options: Initial Training and a Refresher Course.

Prerequisites:
No prerequisites required.

 

Entry Requirements:

  • Must be eligible to receive nationally recognised training within Australia
  • Must provide a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) upon enrolment
  • Must have physical capacity to complete practical tasks, including accessing and progressing from height using PPE
  • Must have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy, and visual interpretation skills
  • Must present photo ID on arrival

 

Refresher Course: Working Safely at Heights (VOC)

This refresher course is designed for individuals who already hold a Statement of Attainment in RIIWHS204E or equivalent. It provides a Verification of Competency (VOC) and revisits the key principles of height safety, inspection, and fall protection systems.

Half Day (includes theory and practical)

$170 Inc. GST

 

Prerequisites:
Must hold a current or previous Statement of Attainment for Work Safely at Heights (RIIWHS204A/B/C/D/E).

 

Entry Requirements:

Must meet the same physical, language, and identification criteria as initial training (see above)

 

Course Content Overview

  • Both Initial and Refresher courses include:
  • Overview of relevant regulations and legislation
  • Australian Standards for working at height
  • Conducting risk assessments and implementing control measures
  • Inspection of personal fall arrest systems (pre and post use)
  • Fall restraint and fall arrest system setup
  • Anchor point selection and inspection
  • Rigging of anchorage slings
  • Use of single and twin lanyards, self-retracting lifelines (SRLs), and temporary horizontal lifelines
  • Suspension intolerance awareness
  • Optional: Demonstration of industrial rescue techniques (where facilities permit)

Who needs to complete a Working at Heights course?
Anyone required to work in areas where there’s a risk of falling from one level to another should complete this training. This includes workers in construction, maintenance, utilities, roofing, and similar industries.
Is the course nationally recognised?
Yes. Both the Initial and Refresher courses deliver and assess the nationally recognised unit RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights, under Skylar Education (RTO 21647).
Do I need to bring my own equipment?
No — all personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the training is provided on the day. You’re welcome to bring your own if you’d like to be assessed using it, but it must meet current safety standards.
How often should I refresh my Working at Heights training?
While there is no fixed expiry, it’s industry best practice to refresh your training every 2 years, or sooner if required by your employer or site-specific safety protocols.
