Old brick smoke stacks are reinforced by steel bands that provide critical structural stability. On this Newcastle structure, the existing bands were rusted and required replacement to meet safety and compliance requirements.
Our team removed the deteriorated bands and discovered that the new replacements did not match the required dimensions. This challenge required on-site modification of the bands to achieve the correct fit. Working at height via rope access, the crew used welding and fabrication techniques to adapt each band, ensuring a secure and precise installation.
The circular nature of the structure meant technicians were working out of each other’s line of sight, requiring strong crew coordination and communication. This collaborative approach ensured the safe and efficient completion of works while maintaining the structural integrity of the smoke stack.
